When considering energy-efficient technologies, the homeowner for this project was interested in sustainable building systems like SIPs. The homeowner looked to Curt Stendel, SIPA Board of Directors Member and SIPA Registered Master Builder from Panelworks Plus, Inc., to assist in the design and construction of this award-winning home.
One of the major benefits of using SIPs was the shop drawing review process. The review facilitated coordination between contractors affording more control and confidence in overall construction. The contractor found the SIP system manufactured by SIPA member Extreme Panel Technologies to be a cost-effective solution that helps eliminate possible defects of hand framing and produced a high quality, tight envelope. This was confirmed by blower door tests indicating a very efficient envelope even with a very complicated design.

Passive solar strategies helped drive the overall layout and design of the home. The home was sited close to the north property line to allow as much solar access on the south side as possible on the narrow urban lot. Large expanses of glazing face south to maximize daylight and heat gain in the winter and minimize need for electric lighting.
