This project is a remodel of a 100+ year old barn: ensuring compliance with modern codes, thermal performance and structural integrity were particularly challenging. SIP construction was critical in accomplishing these goals efficiently.
SIP roof thickness: 12" Jumbo R-Control
The structural capabilities of SIPs panels allowed us to preserve the original structural frame (and all-important character) of the building and provide a high-performance envelope with minimal additional framing. Given the remote location of the project, SIPs considerably simplified material sourcing and saved on labor costs. The thermal performance of the SIPs was critical in meeting the thermal envelope requirements for the project climate.
The existing building structure was insufficient and needed to be entirely re-engineered; the aesthetic goal of the project was to maintain the appearance and interior character of the existing building. By means of SIPs, new foundation and piers, and targeted use of corbeling, shear walls, and new heavy timber beams, we were able to preserve nearly all existing wall and roof framing as visible inside of the structure.
HVAC system:
Ductless Mini-splits
R-value:
+/- R-30 closed cell foam insulation in frame walls; R-10 rigid vertical insulation at foundation; window U-values are 0.30 max
The thermal performance of the SIPs was critical in meeting the thermal envelope requirements for the project climate.
