A modern single family home located on their family’s working cattle farm. The utilization of the space in the basement allows for them to host guests in their two spare bedrooms, full bath, home gym, and bar area with walk-out access to the property in the back of the house. The view of rolling fields and mountains can also be enjoyed from the main level, on the back deck and through the custom windows displayed under vaulted ceilings in the master suite and living area. The open living and kitchen area is perfectly balanced between elegant and comfortable, doubling as an office for both residents to work from home.

SIP benefits for this job: The customers had their heart set on the unique modern design of their home before they met us, but had been discouraged by competing prices for their vision. We later discovered they had been following the construction of another SIP home we were working on across town on our website and social media. The two projects ended up being very similar in shape and design, further solidifying their confidence in our ability to bring their vision to life. Upon meeting, we quickly introduced them to the efficiency and superior quality of SIPs, and the potential money saved by using them. To a less experienced installer, using SIPs for this complex structure may have been more of a challenge than it was worth. With our skilled in-house SIP crew backed by years of experience and led by a master SIP builder, hiring us to design and build the SIP home of their dreams was the obvious choice, and the customers agreed. .

SIP wall thickness and core material:    6" EPS with 19/32 skins
SIP roof thickness and core material:  10" EPS with 19/32 skins

Describe the benefits of using SIPs on this project. Did SIPs help save time, labor, construction costs, or energy? The use of SIPs on this project allowed for us to go from nothing but a floor system to a dried in structure in five days with our experienced four man carpentry crew. Compared to alternative methods of constructing the exterior walls and roof, savings on time, material, and labor costs were significant and undeniable. The tight seal that properly installed SIPs provide creates an air-tight but well ventilated structure, and allows the HVAC and ERV system to operate at maximum efficiency, keeping utility costs down.

Describe any innovative design elements or structural engineering involved: The time saved by using SIPs gives our crew the opportunity to focus on the hand crafted custom details that we showcase proudly as custom builders. The Lakota House features multiple “WOW” factors, including a custom tiled dog shower in the mud room with hot and cold water from a detachable shower head, cable railing inside and out, and an integrated standing desk in the kitchen for working from home. The SIP roof creates matching overhangs and cantilevers otherwise unachievable with standard construction methods, vaulted ceilings throughout the main level, and an attic storage space accessible from the mudroom and a large customized owner's closet in the main bedroom. The unique shape of the house and generous window placement allows natural light to fill the house at all times of day.  The homeowner chose areas to concentrate their budget to maximize what was important to them, lots of open flexible space that will grow with them and their needs through the years.
