Tiny Senior Transitional Housing
The construction of six transitional tiny cabins, spearheaded by the "In Our Backyard" board, exemplifies the efficiency and community spirit of SIP construction. These tiny homes were assembled swiftly, with a volunteer team, guided by an experienced SIP builder, completing all six structures in just one day.
SIP Specifications:
- Wall Thickness and Core Material: 6" GPS
- Roof Thickness and Core Material: 8" & 10" GPS
The choice of SIP panels was driven by their excellent R-values and ease of construction, significantly saving valuable time. Since all labor was volunteered, completing the project quickly was crucial to respect volunteers' time constraints. The project manager, also a volunteer with prior SIP experience, ensured a smooth construction process. The high R-values of the panels will also help reduce heating costs for the cabins, making them more cost-effective than traditional building methods or other prefabricated materials.
Though the shelters are basic in design, they incorporate unique structural elements. Being temporary and movable, they are constructed on skids, which act as their foundation. These skids are anchored to the ground with ground anchors to withstand lateral loads such as seismic and wind forces.
Features and Efficiency:
- HVAC: Each unit is heated with an electric wall heater. Two Fresh 80 vents have been installed in one cabin as a test before adding them to the others.
- No Landscaping: The location does not require landscaping. The structures feature a mix of metal and wood siding.
- Interior: Each cabin is large enough for a bed, microwave, small refrigerator, and some shelves. There will be a shared restroom trailer.
These cabins, intended for temporary housing of 6-9 months for individuals aged 50+, are set up in the Central Lutheran Church parking lot in Anchorage, Alaska. Professional case managers and volunteer navigators will support residents in transitioning to permanent housing and connecting them with necessary services. The aim is to welcome occupants by the end of 2024, fostering a supportive community environment.
