School Welcome Center SIP Building Grand Marais MN

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Folk schools are dedicated to learning for the pure joy of it, offering courses in skills like timber framing and basket making, while fostering lifelong learning. Inspired by Scandinavian folkehøjskolers (folk high schools), these institutions are rapidly gaining popularity in America, emphasizing subjects such as music, theatre, art, tradition, and craft. This new building on the North Shore of Minnesota will host such enriching classes.

Having previously built with Enercept SIPs, the school prioritizes sustainable construction. The design of this schoolhouse is particularly suited for SIP construction due to its location and the need for rapid construction during a limited window.

SIP Specifications:

• Wall Thickness and Core Material: 5-1/2" core panels
• Roof Thickness and Core Material: 9-1/2" core panels

The project features finished-grade, engineered Douglas Fir beams and is designed to support a roof dead load of 15 PSF and a ground snow load of 60 PSF.

Energy Efficiency and Features:

• HVAC: High-efficiency heating and cooling systems
• Windows and Doors: Energy Star-rated
• Lighting: LED throughout

The use of SIPs not only provided fast construction but also aligned perfectly with the school's commitment to sustainability. The building's design ensures a harmonious blend with its natural surroundings while offering a practical and efficient learning space. At North House, located in the northwoods of Minnesota on the shore of Lake Superior, we emphasize traditional northern crafts, inspired by our beautiful and unique location.

This project stands as a testament to innovative and sustainable construction, providing a perfect environment for lifelong learning and skill development.
