Describe the use of the building: Residence

The biggest short term tangible was framing time. Once the outer walls were up and the roof on, they were ready to dry in. No hold up for insulation install or sheeting the walls.

SIP wall thickness: 6 1/2" Walls
SIP roof thicknessl: 12 1/4" Roof

Went from floors only to exterior walls and roof in two weeks. It was great having the second set of engineering eyes look at the plans and make suggestions to improve the overall ease of assembly. The long term savings in energy was also a consideration in the decision to use SIPs.  This was not a simple build. One of the requirements to the architect was that the design needed to be set back into a hill and not a two-story pretentious build. There are two autonomous foundations for the house that are on two levels with about an 18-foot vertical separation between them and connected with a bridge. The lower shop ceiling area had to be built up to the level of the upper foundation. There was also a 37-degree angle that the house had to make where the "bridge" and the main foundation met. With the SIP roof and use of some significant glu-lams, the shed roofs used on the bridge and main house sections had no issues exceeding the snow load requirements. Cantilevered glu-lams carried the upper house and deck load which included the support of a heavy spa.

HERS Index (residential projects): 55
Blower door test results (ACH50) (residential projects): 1.3 ACH @ -50 pa
Energy use intensity in kBtu/ft2 (commercial projects):

The house has three means of heat: radiant floors, splits and wood stove. The splits act as the air conditioning in summer months.

All garage doors in the shop and garage are insulated. The windows are Hurd windows and are all dual pane, low E windows

All of the lighting utilize LED bulbs. The water heater is an energy saving hybrid with a hot water recirculation pump. The eaves are set up to take advantage of solar heat through the windows during winter while shading the interior of the house during the summer

Owner Comment: "SIPs are just starting to get a toe hold in Chelan County. Having some of the cheapest electricity in the US, there were many who down-played the added efficiency of the panels. These same people are now a bit envious of our electric bill and how the estimated break-even point between savings on our utility bill and the additonal initial cost of the SIP panel is only three years. There are also not many builders in the area who were SIP panel proponents other than using them for the roof. In our case, discussions with Extreme Panels sold us on the advantages on the use of the SIP panel so choosing the architect and builder was an important step. It's imperative that they have a solid relationship with the panel manufacturer. Both of them made numerous comments on how well the panels were made and how knowledgeable the customer service reps at Extreme were. Having the bible that Extreme sends detailing SIP construction was a really good thing to have." Regarding the shop -- "A full three-bay shop that is wired for 115/220VAC all around making welding or anything else anywhere in the shop a simple thing. One bay has a lift in it so I can easily pursue the hobby of rebuilding old cars. Plenty of light from windows and light fixtures along with a 7-foot in diameter Big Ass fan that totally lives up to its hype. The floors have radiant heat and there is a split, as well, for any extra heat and summer air conditioning. It is the shop my father would have loved to have!!"
