Describe the end use of the building:
Gathered Oaks is a unique venue located in a serene setting where guests can dwell in congruence with nature. The venue hosts retreats, corporate outings, reunions, weddings/receptions and other special events.
How did SIP construction help you get this job?
The main reason the owners (who have a similar sister property in Moorhead, MN) chose to use SIPs for this project because they had events scheduled for summer and they needed a fast track to the construction process. SIP construction on this property began in January.
SIP wall thickness and core material: 6' EPS walls
SIP roof thickness and core material: 10" EPS roof
Describe the benefits of using SIPs on this project. Did SIPs help save time, labor, construction costs, or energy?
SIPs made for an easy fit over the existing barn roof because the panels were pre-cut to fit the angles and barn design. They were able to enclose the timbers quickly, facilitating the ability to access and finish the interior faster. Enclosing the timbers quickly also protected them from the snow and rain of the season. The SIP construction will make the venue more comfortable, quieter and stronger.
Describe any innovative design elements or structural engineering involved:
The existing building was racked and about five years from falling down. It was a five-dimensional puzzle. Once squared, they reinforced the structure with timbers, and insulated the wall cavities with spray foam, and 10" SIP nail base was put onto the outer roof before building the timber frame addition.
Describe the HVAC system used on the project:
The building and addition are heated and cooled with a high efficiency forced air system.
Any additional comments on the project:
High density spray foam was used in the walls of the existing building along with rigid foam insulation around the new foundation on the existing barn and new addition. They installed triple pane energy efficient windows. The timbers used are Box Heart Doug Fir - this makes the timber show age more quickly to better match the rustic barn look. Reclaimed barn wood was used for the interior finishes. This renovation saved the existing barn form certain destruction. They were open in time to host their first event on June 17, 2017, The venue is currently booked every weekend for the summer months of 2018.
