Describe the end use of the building:
Residential with garage and business space below
How did SIP construction help you get this job?
The combination of SIPS walls with attic trusses allowed us the design flexibility to have a clear span over the garage, with living space above.
SIP wall thickness and core material: 5.5" core graphite-infused SIPS
SIP roof thickness and core material: Combination of 5.5" graphite-infused SIPS with R-15 batts in the top chord
Describe the benefits of using SIPs on this project. Did SIPs help save time, labor, construction costs, or energy?
The SIPS construction allowed us a shorter build time in a difficult location.
Describe any innovative design elements or structural engineering involved:
Combining the 9 1/4" core SIPS with 5 1/2" core SIPS over attic trusses gave us design flexibility with a limited over-all building height.
Please list any certifications the project received, such as ENERGY STAR, LEED, National Green Building Standard, WELL, Passive House, Green Globes or local green building programs. Only list certifications that are completed:
US DOE Zero-Energy Ready, EPA Indoor Air-Plus, Energy Star
HERS Index: 39 without solar panels
Blower door test results: 2.88 ACH50
Energy use intensity in kBtu/ft2 (required only for High Performance Category and recommended for commercial projects):
Living area of 694 s/f has a total btuh of 5,573 on the design degree day, for an energy intensity of
8.030 btuh/sq.ft.
Describe the HVAC system used on the project:
Daikin Ductless heat pump, heats living area and work space below. A Tier 1 heat pump water heater provides the domestic hot water, COP of 2.25
Describe any other energy-saving materials used in the building envelope other than SIPs. List U-values of windows used and the U or R-value of any insulation materials:
Vinyltek Windows (from Canada) have a U-value averaging 0.16.
Floor insulation above fully insulated garage is R-38.
Please list any energy-efficient products or design features, such as lighting, hot water heating, appliances, passive solar:
100% of all lighting is LED, appliances are all energy-star, including stacking front-load washing machine, dishwasher, and refrigerator. Heap pump water heater. Room on roof for 3.9 kW solar array would get the unit to zerto-energy
Were any solar panels installed on the project? If so, indicate the size of the system:
Solar panels will go on once the main house is completed.
Please list any sustainable materials or design features not listed above, such as recycled materials, low-VOC finishes, landscaping, etc.:
Entire exterior is Hardi-plank and hardi-trim, with 100% zero-VOC paints and finishes throughout.
Any additional comments on the project:
The air handling system features a MERV-21 HEPA filter, balancing the range fan, and providing make-up air for the Panasonic Whisper Green bath fan, which provide the ASHRAE 62.2 requirement for fresh air.
