Announcing the 2018 SIPA Building Excellence Award Winners

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – April 24th, 2018 – The 15th Annual Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) Building Excellence Awards were announced during the association’s 2018 Annual Meeting & Conference in Jacksonville, Florida. This year’s panel of judges included Ron Jones, Green Builder Magazine; Chris Fennell, COO at Institute for Building Technology and Safety; and Sam Rashkin, Chief Architect with the DOE and the Zero Energy Ready Home Program. The projects were scored four criteria including how the use of structural insulated panels (SIPs) resulted in design and structural engineering innovation; creative use of SIP construction; and overall environmental sustainability. An additional High-Performance category was included for Residential projects based on their use of SIPs to achieve exceptional energy efficiency as quantified by HERS Index and other supporting data.

2018 Building Excellence Non-Residential Overall Award Winner:
Glenwood Area Fisheries Minn., Submitted by Extreme Panel Technologies

The Non-Residential Overall and High Performance Winner was awarded to the Glenwood Area Fisheries Office through the State of Minnesota.

Featuring Extreme Panel 10” SIP walls and 12” SIP roof, the multi-story office building is LEED Gold and Net Zero Energy Building certified. With 9,407 sf of conditioned spaced the facility achieved an impressive air leakage of only 0.36 ACH blower door test score.

2018 Building Excellence Residential Overall Award Winner:
The Chapman Residence, submitted by Enercept

The competition’s Residential Overall Winner was the Chapman submitted by Enercept. This 2,400 square foot modern new construction home is a successful inner-city infill project located in Edmond, OK. With 6” and 8” SIP walls and an 8” SIP roof, the project designer and contractor were able to quickly frame an efficient envelope in a high traffic area.

“We had an impressive collection of entries in this year’s competition and are excited to see SIPs in many mainstream projects across the world. We were particularly impressed with the exceptional energy efficiency achievements that SIPs contributed to various building envelopes. SIPs technology is improving construction processes and energy efficiency, and we are proud to recognize many of these projects,” said SIPA Executive Director, Jack Armstrong.

The Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) is a 501c6 non-profit association dedicated to increasing the use and acceptance of structural insulated panels (SIPs) in sustainable building by providing an industry forum for promotion, communication, education, quality assurance, and technical and marketing research. SIPs are a high performance, panelized building system that offers superior thermal performance, air tightness, and durability for energy-efficient homes and commercial buildings.

Builders and design professionals seeking to reduce energy use and minimize the carbon footprint of their buildings utilize SIPs as a cost-effective solution for exterior wall and roof systems that also cuts down on framing time, significantly reduces construction waste, and ensures greater jobsite quality control through prefabrication. SIPs are an enabling technology to meet to the Architecture 2030 Challenge for net-zero, carbon neutral buildings today. Learn more at www.sips.org.
