Building a Sustainable Legacy: SIPs and Innovation at the National Monument

This project, a National Monument Welcome and Educational Center, prioritized energy efficiency and sustainability. To achieve these goals, the construction team selected Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for their exceptional insulation values.

SIP Construction: A Strategic Choice

  • High Insulation: 12.25" GPS core for walls and 15" GPS core for the roof provided superior insulation, crucial for energy efficiency in a remote location.
  • Construction Efficiency: Murus provided precut panels, significantly reducing on-site labor requirements.
  • Innovative Solutions: Murus also supplied curved GPS foam blocks, enabling the construction of curved walls with the same insulation value as the flat SIPs.

Sustainable Design and Engineering:

  • Natural Materials: The structure primarily utilizes glulam and CLT, minimizing the use of concrete and steel.
  • Impressive Scale: The project boasts 165 custom-built Douglas Fir glulam columns, all produced in a former potato barn in Patten, ME.
  • Energy Efficiency:
    • Off-Grid Operation: The building functions as a thermal battery, powered primarily by a 36.75 kW remote solar array with a propane generator for backup.
    • Passive Systems: Incorporates passive solar design with a thermal mass floor system and a solar trombe wall.

Recognition and Accolades:

  • ACEC Honor Award: Received for the innovative fabrication of aesthetic structural elements.

This project serves as a testament to the power of sustainable building practices. By utilizing SIPs, incorporating innovative design elements, and prioritizing renewable energy, the National Monument Welcome and Educational Center sets a new standard for environmentally responsible construction.
