BEA: 2025 Building Excellence Award - Classic Winner
This was built for a client as a residential home.
Building End Use:
This project involved the construction of a residential home for clients seeking a more sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle. The family desired to relocate to the mountains, purchase a sizable plot of land suitable for farming, and build a spacious and energy-efficient home. The design incorporated a multi-generational living concept, with the entire downstairs dedicated to the younger family members and the upstairs reserved for the parents and communal gathering spaces.
End Use Description:
The homeowners prioritized building a high-quality, exceptionally energy-efficient home to minimize their environmental impact and reduce energy costs.
SIP Specifications:
- Wall: 6.5" total thickness with a 5 5/8" EPS core.
- Roof: 10.25" total thickness with a 9 3/8" EPS core.
Benefits of Using SIPs:
The utilization of SIPs for the entire above-grade walls yielded several key advantages:
- Accelerated Construction: The use of large, 22' long roof panels significantly reduced construction time, streamlining the overall project timeline.
- Enhanced Energy Efficiency: The inherent nature of SIPs resulted in an impressive 0.69 ACH50 air leakage score, significantly minimizing energy loss and reducing heating and cooling costs. This exceptional air tightness also contributes to a healthier indoor environment.
- Cost-Effectiveness: ACME Panel's precut and routed panels, combined with the Ready-to-Assemble (RTA) package including precut lumber, rim board, and Glulams, streamlined the construction process. This prefabrication minimized on-site labor, reduced waste, and ultimately contributed to cost savings for both the builder and the clients.
Innovative Design Elements and Structural Engineering:
- Long-Span Roof System: The exceptional strength and structural integrity of SIPs enabled the use of 22' long roof panels, eliminating the need for traditional trusses. This innovative approach reduced labor costs, simplified the construction process, and facilitated the creation of a striking vaulted ceiling.
- Integrated Overhangs: The roof panels were extended beyond the top plates of the walls to create overhangs. This design not only enhanced energy efficiency by providing shade and protection from the elements but also streamlined construction by eliminating the need for separate framing of the overhangs.
Project Highlights:
- Blower Door Test Results: ACH50: 0.69
- HVAC System: Geothermal System
- Energy-Efficient Features: Heat Pump Water Heater
- Sustainable Practices: ACME Panel's manufacturing facility utilizes primarily solar power, and panel waste is recycled and reused within other industries.
Testimonial:
The homeowners are extremely satisfied with their new home. In addition to appreciating the shortened construction timeframe and the home's aesthetically pleasing design, they have been particularly impressed with the low energy bills since moving in. Taylor Hollow Construction, the builder, expressed their ongoing satisfaction with ACME Panel and their continued preference for building with SIPs.
Key Improvements:
- Enhanced Clarity and Flow: The text now reads more smoothly and concisely.
- Stronger Word Choices: More impactful and descriptive verbs and adjectives were used.
- Improved Structure: The information is presented in a more logical and organized manner.
- Emphasis on Client Needs and Values: The focus on the client's desire for a sustainable and energy-efficient lifestyle is strengthened.
- Incorporation of Testimonials: The positive feedback from both the homeowners and the builder adds credibility and reinforces the project's success.
